2023 Landscaping Trends

January 19th, 2023 | By: Heather Knapp | Blog

As we enter a new year, 2023, it brings along a time to reflect on all the changes and current landscaping trends that we are seeing today. . The last few years of course, brought about tremendous change. Not only in the landscape design and build industry, but in all industries across the board, and within all the personal lives of all our employees, families, friends, and clients.

In so many aspects and facets, the landscape industry faced hurdles and setbacks. There were restrictions on construction, there was a demand for more labor, there were supply chain issues that hit from the nursery growers to oil production to the truck suppliers. Pricing for everything spiked as demands grew and supplies and materials became more difficult to obtain. All factors in turn, began to slowly influence the landscaping industry trends we are seeing today. After 48 years in business, we assumed we had seen it all, and yet, the surprises kept coming.

The silver lining in the landscape and construction and many home improvement industries, in the last three years, was the rise of homeowners who wanted to invest in their property. More time spent at home and more people working from home offices, meant an increase of interest in improving and changing, renovating and creating spaces within their properties.

New Trends in Landscaping

The request for swimming pools has skyrocketed over the last three years. One of the biggest landscaping trends we saw in our industry was the spike in designing custom inground pools. When travel became difficult or felt too risky, families opted to create vacation spaces in their own backyard. The increase of swimming pool construction spread through the tri-state area over these last three years. Bringing a private oasis, designing a personal getaway, became more important than ever before. We designed and built everything from modern swimming pools to custom spas to fit each clients needs and budget and stylistic preference.

The addition of a swimming pool is a big undertaking and large expense, and we always recommend working with a team of professional designers who can help with every step along the way. And while it may not seem like it right now, in the deepest coldest part of winter, this is the time to plan for a pool, if you hope to be swimming this summer.

The importance of creating outdoor living spaces is the second most popular request in landscaping trends today. More time has been spent outside, more so than ever before. Outside was our safe space to gather, and many homeowners realized the need to create an outdoor room, or rooms, to enjoy year-round. Creating these outdoor living spaces include everything from adding in firepits, fireplaces, pools, spas, outdoor kitchens and bars, outdoor TVs and music systems, patios or new garden spaces.

We suggest creating an outdoor space that feels like an extension of your home. Consider the needs for your family, the space you have to use, and the best way to utilize a new room. Every space is customized and creates new space for families to enjoy outside of their home. With landscaping market trends, we saw an increase in outdoor dining space, and outdoor fire pit seating area, which provided a safe and aesthetic way to gather in the best of times, and through uncertain times.

Now, as we are entering into a new year of projects, we are seeing the latest landscaping trends and have new clients on the horizon. The past three years of a pandemic changed our industry in many ways we see today. We continue to grow to strive and move with the times, adapting to the setbacks and the growth at the same time. We are looking forward to the new developments, creativity, challenges, and inspiration to be found along the way.
