What is Hardscaping?

August 27th, 2015 | By: Mitchell Knapp | Blog

Many homeowners ask will us, what is hardscaping? Hardscaping is described as the placement of non-plant elements such as fences, walkways, paving, and lighting in a planned outdoor area. Essentially, hardscaping is a general term applied to a number of fixtures that can be included on a project or property. On almost every property that we work on, the project will incorporate a variety of hardscaping elements. Everything from simple stone steps, to elaborate outdoor custom kitchens, is considered hardscape.

Incorporating hardscape into your design is crucial. It often serves as an element used to transition from one part of the property to another. Whether it is a stone or pebble walkway leading through a garden, or a custom patio space used to separate a pool from a lawn, hardscape is a crucial element to every design. Many times when a new client is working on their backyard design and wondering what is hardscaping, or what elements of hardscaping make sense for their property, they are often surprised to learn how many features there are to choose from.

Hardscaping is truly customizable as well. Outdoor kitchens and BBQ or bar areas that require a lot of hardscaping work but are designed and built to fit any home or backyard. From stone pavers to marble counter tops, to custom patio spaces and appliances, it is a lot of hardscape material throughout the property. Fireplaces as well will require professional hardscaping design and installation and can be customized to fit any style or space.

Working with high quality materials that are durable to last through harsh winters and hot summers is the key to investing in your hardscaping. As a homeowner, you want to make sure that your project is being completed at its highest standards with the best available materials in the industry today. Make sure to ask the architect on your job how the stones or marble or material will withstand in every season and against every element nature may throw it’s way.
